Basic Fact Fluency

BFF Division is a flexible intervention kit that helps students develop a deep understanding of division through reasoning, not memorization of steps.

Instead of relying on step-by-step procedures, students explore division through Math Empowered’s Core Four Instructional Routines:

  • Math Talks to build meaning around equal groups and place value

  • Randomizers & Sorts to uncover patterns and relationships

  • DARE-ing application problems to strengthen problem-solving

  • Thinking Pathways games and tasks to reinforce strategies through collaboration

Using place value models, area models, number lines, and equations, students learn to decompose and distribute quantities into equal groups, building the quotient in a way that makes sense.

The division algorithm becomes a natural recording of students’ thinking, rather than a set of steps to memorize.

At Math Empowered, we believe mathematical growth comes from engaging in the learning process—not from what students already know. In this session, participants explore the core values that guide Math Empowered classrooms, including fostering a growth mindset, honoring student thinking, and viewing mistakes and productive struggle as the necessary tension that leads to deep understanding.

Asynchronous Learning (~45-60 minutes)

Instructional Practices: The Core Four

Explore Math Empowered’s four signature instructional practices: Math Talks, Partner Randomizer Sorts, DARE-ing Application Problems, and Thinking Pathway Games and Tasks. This course introduces the purpose and structure of each routine and demonstrates how they support conceptual understanding, reasoning, and student discourse.

Unpacking Your Materials

Get your BFF Fluency intervention materials ready for immediate classroom use. In this short course, participants learn how to efficiently unpack, organize, and prepare the resources included in the kit so they can begin supporting student learning right away.

Live Virtual Session (120 minutes)

BFF Division Deep Dive

Join a Math Empowered team member for an interactive session exploring the mathematics behind the BFF Division Kit. Together we will examine the progression from conceptual understanding → reasoning strategies → efficient procedures, and explore the thinking pathways embedded throughout the materials.

Follow-Up Session

Reconnect with a Math Empowered facilitator after implementing the BFF Kit in your classroom. Participants reflect on their experiences, share student successes and challenges, and deepen their understanding of how to support students along the thinking pathways toward mathematical fluency.
